At a seminar the other day a lady asked me a brilliant question. She said that she was so confused and wanted to know the difference between awakening, ascension and enlightenment? There is undoubtedly so much confusion about spiritual awakening, especially the difference between the labels awakening, ascension and enlightenment. For a long time I was confused by different meanings given to each one and thought them to be separate – taking on other people’s understandings of what they meant. But I had an AHA moment when I realized that they are one and the same. It’s the recognition and inner knowing of being in the world, but not of it. The letting go of all that had kept you at the mercy of your mind. The embracing of genuine self-love and self-acceptance. The surrendering to the soul/divine self so that it can shine through you and guide you consciously moment to moment, in all its infinite wisdom, love and compassion. It’s the stepping out of time as we have known it, to embracing the now, where our true self is experienced moment-to-moment.
So in a nutshell all three different names refer to the same thing. They refer to the icing on the cake of the spiritual journey. The prize of wading through the emotional hives and mazes, the ups and downs of everyday life, the traumas and triumphs on the journey back to our true selves. The award is the ultimate gift – it’s the grace of inner peace. The inner knowing that all is well and always has been. That life was always about coming home to who we truly are, that there really is ‘no place like home’.
